Theresa Arvin’s Story

My son is a typical 13-year-old boy that loves video games and basketball. He is a great kid that is involved in youth group and volunteers his time with the Junior Mental Health Association.

Through his involvement with youth group, my son made a solid group of friends that he is very close to. After starting middle school, he began asking me if he could transfer to St. Benedict Cathedral School where all of his youth group friends attend.

My husband, Gil, has had heart problems, which has left him unable to work for the past two years. With me being the only one able to work in the family, we were unsure as to how we could make this a possibility financially. We found out about the voucher program and were shocked to learn we were eligible.

My two older sons both graduated from public schools and went on to earn college degrees, but I knew that St. Benedict Cathedral School would be a better fit for my youngest son. Since the switch, he has had higher self esteem and is simply a happier kid. He is striving to get good grades and is putting the effort in to earn them. I really feel the smaller class sizes and knowing the students around him have made a major difference for my son.

The application process for the voucher program went very smoothly and I have already recommended the program to others.

Right now, my son hopes to be on the basketball team at St. Benedict Cathedral School and is enjoying being a teenager. I hope that he will eventually follow in his brothers’ footsteps and earn a degree and lead a fulfilling life. The decision that Gil and I were able to make to transfer our son is the first step in helping him achieve the dreams that we see for his future.
