Principal Leanne DeFelice’s Story

Indiana’s new Choice Scholarship program is giving two students from lower-income Hoosier families the opportunity to benefit from the college-preparatory and leadership development curriculum that The Howe School has offered since 1884. We are excited to have these students engaged in our mission of creating global leaders through rigorous academic programs.

Our new voucher families told me that their public schools were unfortunately not meeting their needs. So, they looked into alternatives and the voucher program has now given them a chance to try a different academic approach at a price they can afford. They are encouraged by our great living and learning environment at Howe and they like our focus on structure and discipline.

Nearly 99 percent of our graduates go on to college and we attribute this success to the live and learn environment that we foster to help create a college-going culture. We also help our students prepare for higher education in several other ways including ACT assistance and career guidance.

Children attending our school benefit from multiple Advanced Placement classes, dual credit classes earned both for high school and college as well as the Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JRTOC) curriculum offered through a federal program sponsored by the United States Armed Forces. JRTOC classes teach children leadership and responsibility skills that are vital for their success in the future. Our students also enjoy the school’s small classroom environment as we never have more than 16 children in a class.

We are honored to be part of Indiana’s school voucher program. Hoosier families deserve to have choices when it comes to seeking a quality education for their children and helping them prepare for college.
